THE SEA AND THE PIER

The Thing

The analysis of light and dark, harmony and disrupted equilibrium along our route

Textures and feelings through the walk

The single plane exists in equilibrium, in harmony, content and peaceful

However, as it is lowered onto a representation of 'our route' it becomes de-harmonized, out of sync.  Thus representing the areas on our route where the harmony is un-balanced and disrupted.
The piece is a true representation of our feelings of harmony along the walk.

Vast Expanse vs Tightly Packed

An image demonstrating the isolation that you can feel when in the sheer vastness open to the elements near the end of our route.

compared to the relative saftey and togetherness felt when nearer to the start of our route and central town.

Harmony?

Personal and Physical Experience

This building was erected after one of the old historic buildings was demolished, an identical old historic building lies across the street.

This is a perfect example of where once there was harmony, and now there is no longer.

Sketches from the walk

Simplified sketch of the church picking out defined shapes

differing lamp posts along the walk

the shape and patterns inspire me

For me, the Eagle tower is the most interesting part of the walk

The south parade pier sits very comfortably in its surroundings

Activities and Use

Marina and I had a brain storming session about what goes on in and around our route from the St Judes church to the eventual destination of the beautifully utilised South Parade Pier! We came up with the following verbs:
WORSHIP, SHOP, DRAW & PAINT, EAT, DRINK, CHUCK, THROW AWAY, WALK, DANCE, RUN, BIKE, RIDE, PLAY, DRIVE, LIVE, BREATH, SWIM, SAIL, PADDLE, CANOODLE, WADE, FISH, and WINDSURF.
Feel free to wander with your imagination and fit these activities in the route you took and you too will find that Portsmouth has a lot offer.
You can see these activities on our mood map.

Materials and Textures along the route

compared to the beginning of our journey this contrasted the town by the vast expanse of the sea

The Process

Soon we will have an online facility for everyone to 'dump' their sketches/images/photos/any work that may be of use.
Once this is up and running, we will be able to consistently update the blog with each others work and help us to show the steps we have taken leading up to the final exhibition. :)

Welcome!

Thanks for checking out Studio 9's blog.  Here you will be able to keep track of our process in the 'Reading the City' project.
Enjoy!
